MACON, Ga. — Weather should not keep anyone from the polls in Georgia on Tuesday. Forecasts from north Georgia to the coast call for mild temperatures, plenty of clouds and only a slim chance of a passing shower on Election Day.

In north Georgia, temperatures are expected to sit near 59 degrees when polls open at 7 a.m., reach the upper 60s by midday and top out around 72 in mid-afternoon under mostly cloudy skies with breaks of sun. Readings should hold near 70 into the evening as polls close, and forecasters do not expect rain heavy enough to bother voters waiting in line.

South Georgia will run warmer. The National Weather Service forecast for Albany calls for a high near 82 under mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of showers later in the day. On the coast, the Savannah forecast shows a high near 79, with a slight chance of an early shower before skies turn mostly sunny.

The bigger weather story arrives after the votes are counted. A stronger cold front is expected to bring heavy rain and possible thunderstorms to north Georgia late Wednesday into Thursday, with 1 to 2 inches of rain possible. Showers are likely in Macon on Wednesday afternoon and night, and Albany and Savannah carry chances of showers and storms into Thursday.

The rain would be welcome. Sunday showers left most of north Georgia with only light totals, from a trace to a quarter of an inch, while LaGrange picked up a little more than half an inch, doing little to ease lingering dry conditions. Most days this week should run warmer than the normal early November high of 69 degrees in north Georgia, and calmer, drier weather should settle back in by the weekend.
