ATLANTA, Ga. — Georgia weather is about to flip after a stretch of mid-October record heat. A strong cold front arrives Friday night, replacing upper-80s afternoons with weekend highs in the 60s, gusty winds and the season’s first frost watch in the mountains.

Metro Atlanta is still chasing records Thursday near 88 degrees and Friday near 85. Forecasters say the stretch since Tuesday has likely matched or beaten daily highs each day. Northeast foothill spots such as Gainesville and Cornelia were pointed toward the upper 80s Thursday, far above typical mid-October readings in the low to mid-70s.

As the front crosses north Georgia Friday evening, a few light showers are possible, but wind is the bigger hazard. Gusts near 30 mph are expected overnight into Saturday morning, with mountain gusts around 40 mph while temperatures slide into the 40s and low 50s.

Saturday morning readings in the higher elevations may sit in the upper 30s after a roughly 40-degree plunge from Friday afternoon peaks. Frost becomes a risk Saturday night near Blue Ridge, Helen, Clayton and Hiawassee where breezes ease. Foothill lows may reach the low 40s.

South Georgia and the coast will cool too, though not as sharply as the north. Residents should stow loose outdoor items before the windy overnight hours and expect the first clear fall weekend of the season.

Travelers heading into the mountains for the weekend should pack layers. Afternoon highs in the 60s will feel like a different season after a week of summer-like heat, and overnight frost could coat decks and windshields above the foothills.
