CHAMBLEE, Ga. — A vacant 18-story office tower that loomed over Clairmont Road in Chamblee for roughly 50 years was reduced to a pile of rubble Saturday morning in a planned implosion.
Charges went off at 7:45 a.m. at 1800 Century Boulevard, near Clairmont Road and Interstate 85 northeast of downtown Atlanta. Spectators bundled against the morning chill gathered to watch, and the demolition contractor set up bleachers for the crowd while warning people to stay well away from the blast zone.
Atlas Demolition, a Cartersville company, handled the job. The tower dropped in seconds, sending a cloud of dust over the surrounding office park as onlookers cheered.
The tower had sat vacant since 2025, the year the state’s revenue agency relocated its main offices elsewhere. An effort to turn the tower into apartments was later abandoned, which cleared the way for it to come down rather than be reused.
What comes next for the property has not been announced. The site sits in a busy commercial corridor along I-85 where several older office buildings have been redeveloped or torn down as demand for suburban office space has shifted.
Crews are expected to spend the coming weeks hauling away debris and clearing the lot. Drivers on Clairmont Road and Century Boulevard should expect trucks entering and leaving the site during the cleanup, and short lane closures are possible while heavy equipment moves in and out.
For Chamblee, the implosion removes one of the most visible landmarks along the I-85 approach into the city. The tall, boxy tower had been a familiar sight to commuters for decades, and its absence opens a large parcel close to the interstate whose future will be watched closely by neighbors and city leaders.
