POOLER, Ga. — Mitsubishi Power Americas will put $490 million into a larger gas turbine parts operation in Chatham County, a project Gov. Brian Kemp announced Friday that is expected to bring more than 220 new jobs to coastal Georgia.

The work centers on the Savannah Machinery Works, which sits at 1000 Pine Meadow Drive outside Pooler. The company plans to add 450,000 square feet there to make components for gas turbines, and hiring will cover manufacturing, operations, heavy machinery and technician positions.

The Savannah Economic Development Authority called it the largest investment to date by Mitsubishi Power Americas and said a groundbreaking ceremony will be scheduled later to start construction. The state economic development department worked the project alongside the authority, Georgia Power and Georgia Quick Start.

In his statement, Kemp credited talks with Mitsubishi Power and its parent, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, held in Tokyo. Mitsubishi Power Americas president Bill Newsom said in the release that keeping up with rising electricity demand takes new spending on plants, suppliers and workers.

State economic development commissioner Pat Wilson pointed to the ports, rail lines, highways and airports as reasons the company keeps growing in Georgia, noting it first arrived during the recession. Georgia Power said the next generation of turbines for its own plants will be built in the state.

The announcement adds to a run of large projects the governor has touted this fall. Blue Bird plans a roughly $300 million school bus plant in Fort Valley with 375 jobs, Hyundai Transys is putting nearly $560 million and 320 jobs into West Point, and Pirelli has a $1.2 billion expansion in Rome expected to add 1,000 jobs.
