Atlanta Sci-Fi and Fantasy Expo Returns to Northlake Mall After COVID-19 Hiatus

After a prolonged hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Atlanta Sci-Fi and Fantasy Expo made its much-anticipated return at Northlake Mall on March 15-16. The expo, a beloved event in the local community, was founded by Tony Cade, the owner of Challenges Games and Comics, and has become a staple for fans of all things sci-fi and fantasy.

A Move to Northlake Mall

This year marked a significant change for the expo as it transitioned from its original home at North DeKalb Mall to the vibrant space of Northlake Mall. The relocation was necessitated by the sale of North DeKalb Mall for redevelopment. In 2023, Cade also made the move to Northlake Mall for Challenges Games and Comics, aligning the business with the expo’s new venue.

Fueling Community Spirit

The community expressed strong interest in reviving the expo, which had been dormant during the height of the pandemic. With free admission, the event aimed to provide an inclusive and affordable experience, reminiscent of larger pop culture events that can often be pricey for attendees.

An Engaging Experience

This year’s expo featured an array of attractions that catered to diverse interests. Attendees enjoyed three panel rooms, a spacious gaming area, and over 40 vendors offering unique merchandise. An exciting highlight was the Interdimensional Ball, an entertaining addition to the festival’s schedule.

Gaming and Cosplay Galore

The gaming room buzzed with excitement as Nathan Velliquette hosted a thrilling game of Warhammer 40,000. Cosplay also took center stage, with enthusiasts like Tammy Thomas donning the iconic look of Elphaba from “Wicked,” while Pam and Eric Lopez astonished attendees as Bulma and Vegeta, respectively. Makeup artist Renzo Ladon displayed his extraordinary designs, captivating onlookers.

Celebrity Appearances and Artistic Showcases

Fans were delighted by appearances from Whim Brightooth, played by Natasha Thompson, and the talented actress and singer Tasha Scott, who graced the expo with her presence. Atlanta artist Don Hillsman II, known as The Most Known Unknown, showcased his compelling comic book illustrations, captivating comic enthusiasts.

Vendors and Interactive Activities

The expo featured a wide range of vendors, each offering something special. Mitchell Purvis dazzled attendees with collectibles, while Marah Gelbaum represented Gina Gallois with her vendor booth. Natasha from Spicy Ninja Designs brought handmade treasures to the event. The Learn to Swordfight Meetup group also entertained audiences with demonstrations of sword martial arts.

Connecting Creators and Fans

Comic book writers Kelly Burnham and Greg Burnham made their mark by connecting with fans and displaying their work. Vendors James and Erin Harris showcased Father Daughter Collectables, a treasure trove for fans of Star Wars and K-pop memorabilia.

A Weekend of Fun and Community
