TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference is weighing a sportsmanship response after Alabama fans threw bottles and cans at Georgia players leaving the field following the Bulldogs’ 20-17 win Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Dozens of items landed in the Alabama end zone as Georgia walked toward the tunnel. Coaches told players to put helmets back on, and staffers shielded safety Khalil Barnes until he found his helmet.

Alabama athletics called the scene unacceptable behavior by some attendees in a Sunday statement, said it was gathering information, and warned that such conduct will not be tolerated.

As of Monday morning the league had not announced a penalty. Tennessee, Texas and LSU each paid $250,000 after fans threw debris during games in recent seasons, with commissioner Greg Sankey stressing that interruptions and endangerment of participants cannot be part of SEC events.

Those prior fines followed in-game stoppages. Saturday’s debris came after the final whistle, but Georgia players still needed helmets to reach the locker room, a detail that keeps the conference’s safety language in play.

The same night Georgia moved to 6-0 and later rose to No. 1 in the Top 25 after the Tuscaloosa victory, while Alabama dropped its first game of the season.

League precedent suggests a six-figure fine plus identification and bans for offenders when schools can find them on video, though Texas previously reported it could not identify every thrower after a 2024 incident against Georgia in Austin.

For Georgia, the win and the poll climb are the lasting scoreboard facts; the debris episode is now a conference discipline question that sits with SEC offices rather than with the Bulldogs’ next practice plan.
