MABLETON, Ga. — One visitor died and four other people were injured Monday afternoon in an incident involving the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, Cobb County police said.

Police said the call came in at about 3:58 p.m. Officers assigned to the park and uniformed patrol units responded, and detectives from the Major Crimes Unit opened an investigation into the circumstances.

The ride was stopped with a set of cars near the top, and riders were evacuated. Six Flags Over Georgia said park staff and local authorities responded immediately and that the company is cooperating fully with the investigation. The company said it would not share additional details out of respect for the family’s privacy and that it is supporting affected guests and team members.

A Six Flags spokesperson also said the company temporarily closed similar attractions across its parks. The City of Mableton, where the park sits, said Public Safety Director Dr. Kerry Stallings is coordinating with Cobb County police and park security.

Cobb County Commission Chair Lisa Cupid issued a statement Monday evening calling the event a terrible tragedy and offering condolences to the person’s family and friends. Authorities have not released the victim’s name or a cause determination.

Six Flags Over Georgia is west of Atlanta in Cobb County. The park closed early after the incident, and traffic around the exits backed up as visitors left. State safety officials are part of the broader review of what happened on the hypercoaster as investigators reconstruct the sequence that left one guest dead and four hurt.
