ATLANTA, Ga. — Construction crews have started work on MARTA’s first pair of Arterial Rapid Transit corridors, upgrading stops along Metropolitan Parkway in southwest Atlanta and Cleveland Avenue toward East Point.
The lines follow two existing routes. Route 95 runs along Metropolitan Parkway, while Route 78 covers Cleveland Avenue. The goal is a quicker trip: the new buses will get priority at traffic signals and will stop less often than regular service.
Riders should also notice the stops themselves. Plans call for bigger platforms, larger shelters with better cover from the weather, bike racks and screens that show live arrival times. Larry Prescott, the MARTA assistant general manager who oversees design, engineering and infrastructure, has said the roomier shelters are meant to hold more people at once and keep them drier in bad weather. Transit leaders marked the start of the work with a groundbreaking along the corridors.
The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority says the early work is aimed at the busiest stretches of the corridors, which carry riders to transit hubs in the West End and in East Point. Route 95 also serves students heading to Atlanta Metropolitan State College.
Bus service is not being suspended during the work, but riders may find temporary stops in place while each section is built. MARTA has not released opening dates for individual stops.
East Point, one of the cities that border Atlanta, sits at the southern end of the Cleveland Avenue line. The agency expects construction on both corridors to wrap up by mid-2029.
