STONECREST, Ga. — Taps are running again in a Stonecrest neighborhood after DeKalb County crews spent close to two days fixing a broken water main along Ottawa Trail near Rock Springs Road.
The 8-inch main burst late Wednesday afternoon, cutting off water to homes in the area. The DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management sent crews to dig out and repair the pipe, and the work was still going early Thursday as a section of Ottawa Trail stayed closed.
County officials said the pipe repair was finished at about 5 p.m. Thursday, and shortly after 6 p.m. water pressure was fully back with no outages reported. People in the area may see discolored water for a while, and the county is asking them to run faucets inside and outside their homes and businesses to flush their plumbing.
No boil water advisory was issued during the outage. The county handed out free bottled water at 3198 Ottawa Trail, at the corner of Ottawa Trail and Winslow Crossing, and at Fairington Elementary School on Phillip Bradley Drive, and said neighbors can keep picking up water for as long as they need it.
For people on the affected streets, the outage stretched across most of two days. Some residents said their faucets first ran dry around 1 p.m. Wednesday, and service went on and off from that afternoon until the repair was done. Early on Thursday, county officials had warned customers to expect problems with their water and had not yet offered a timetable for finishing the job, as workers kept digging around the burst pipe through the morning.
Separately, county crews are working nearby on Panola Road on a planned project to replace aging water pipes.
