NEW ORLEANS, La. — Two Georgia Southern players picked up Sun Belt Conference weekly awards Monday, as linebacker Anthony Bynum was named Defensive Player of the Week and kicker Tripp Bryant took the Special Teams honor for their work in the Eagles’ road win at Old Dominion.
Bynum, a fourth-year outside linebacker, was all over the field in the win in Norfolk, Virginia, last Thursday. He made eight tackles, three of them behind the line of scrimmage, with two sacks and a forced fumble. His last play mattered most: with 1:20 to go and the Monarchs driving to tie, he stripped the quarterback at the Old Dominion 15, and teammate MJ Stroud fell on the loose ball to end the threat. The two sacks were a season high for Bynum, and his defensive grade from PFF, 90.7, topped every player on either side.
Bryant, a second-year kicker, accounted for 11 points. He made field goals of 33, 43 and 31 yards, all in the second quarter, as Georgia Southern built a nine-point halftime cushion, and he added both extra points. The three field goals were a season best for him.
As a group, the Eagles defense held Old Dominion to 65 rushing yards and 266 total yards and finished with four sacks and two fumble recoveries.
The victory was Georgia Southern’s third of the season and its second in league play, against one conference loss. The Eagles have an open week before App State visits Allen E. Paulson Stadium in Statesboro on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 6:30 p.m. App State’s Jaquari Lewis, who ran for four touchdowns as the Mountaineers won at Coastal Carolina, was the league’s Offensive Player of the Week.
