ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Georgia Tech won its own tournament on the last hole Sunday, finishing one stroke ahead of Georgia Southern to take the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational for the first time since 2012.
The Yellow Jackets closed with a 5-under 283 and finished the 54 holes at 16-under 848. Georgia Southern, which held the lead after two rounds, posted 287 on the final day to end at 849, and Southern California was third at 850. Pepperdine and Clemson rounded out the top five in the 14-team field.
The title came down to the 18th green. USC slipped back as the last groups reached the closing hole, leaving Tech and Georgia Southern to settle it. Tech senior Andrew Ferworn played his last three holes birdie, par, par, and teammate Albert Hansson parred the 18th while a Georgia Southern player made bogey there to hand the Jackets the win.
Ferworn had his best event of the fall. He shot a 5-under 67 on Sunday, going out in 4-under on the front nine, and finished at 9-under 207, one shot behind the individual winner from Duke, who finished 10-under. Ferworn made 13 birdies against four bogeys over three rounds. Hansson shot an even-par 72 in the final round.
It is Georgia Tech’s third win in the event’s 20-year history, after titles in 2010 and 2012, and the team’s second tournament win this fall. Both have come in the first season under head coach Ryan Hybl, who was hired in May as the sixth head coach in program history.
Play ran Friday through Sunday on the Alpharetta club’s Lakeside Course, a par-72 layout of about 7,068 yards. Virginia came in as the defending champion.
