ATLANTA, Ga. — Georgia Tech will keep leading two national artificial intelligence research centers after the National Science Foundation renewed them with a combined $38.4 million.

NSF awarded $20 million to extend the AI Institute for Advances in Optimization, known as AI4OPT, through 2031, and $18.4 million for another five years of AI-ALOE, the national institute devoted to AI in adult and online education. A third Georgia Tech-led center, AI-CARING, gets a one-year extension with no added money.

AI4OPT blends AI with mathematical optimization to help make fast decisions in complicated systems. Its next phase leans harder into real-time, interactive tools for power grids, supply chains, transportation and advanced manufacturing. The institute also runs education programs from K-12 classrooms to a training effort for faculty at rural schools, and an industry partner program. Industrial and systems engineering professor Pascal Van Hentenryck leads it.

AI-ALOE studies how AI can improve online learning for adults. In its first phase it built seven AI agents and a data system for AI-assisted courses. Next it will focus on what researchers call adaptive expertise, the ability to carry skills into new situations, and will push into workplace and vocational training in fields such as advanced manufacturing and data science. Its partners now number five higher-education schools and six companies. Computer science professor Ashok Goel directs the institute.

Interim President Tim Lieuwen said in the announcement that the awards recognize the strength of the school’s researchers and will help prepare students and workers for jobs shaped by AI.
