ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia is the Southeastern Conference’s lone unbeaten team and the new No. 1 after a 20-17 road win at Alabama that showcased the Bulldogs’ defense more than any single offensive flash.

Coach Kirby Smart took a roster missing three of its top playmakers into Tuscaloosa and still closed out what had been one of the hottest programs in the country. Alabama led 14-10 at halftime; Georgia allowed just three points after the break.

Quarterback Gunner Stockton finished 9-of-10 for 104 yards on third downs, a steady mark that kept drives alive while the defense, led by standouts including Chris Cole and KJ Bolden, forced Alabama to settle.

Smart improved to 96-1 in games when Georgia allows 20 or fewer points and to 26-11 against Top 10 opponents. Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer fell to 22-2 when leading FBS games at halftime and 21-7 against Top 25 teams.

Elsewhere in the league, Texas lost its grip on No. 1, LSU fell to Kentucky and Texas A&M continued to slide, clearing space for Georgia at the top of the playoff conversation.

Stockton’s efficiency and the offensive line’s cohesion remain the hinge for an offense still developing skill players such as London Humphreys, Jaden Reddell, Talyn Taylor and Dwight Phillips Jr. The defense already looks title-capable if the offense avoids turnovers.

Georgia carries that formula into the Auburn rivalry next, still undefeated and suddenly alone atop the conference standings.

The short week into Auburn will test whether that defensive standard and Stockton’s third-down poise travel from a hostile night in Tuscaloosa to a rivalry spotlight in Athens.
