Atlanta: TD 9 raises weekend tropical rain threat

Dark storm clouds gathering over a landscape

ATLANTA, Ga. — Tropical Depression 9 formed over the southwest Gulf late Tuesday and is forecast to strengthen into Hurricane Isaias before a late-week landfall along the central Gulf Coast, leaving north Georgia in a weekend rain threat after several dry, pleasant days.

Metro Atlanta forecast desks said the system is aimed at the Mississippi–Alabama coast late Friday into Saturday, potentially as a Category 2 storm, with tropical moisture spreading into metro Atlanta Saturday into Sunday. Street flooding in low-lying spots and gusty winds are possible; any tornado risk depends on the exact track and how moisture overlaps with wind shear.

South Georgia weather offices, watching the eastern fringe of the circulation, already flagged First Alert Weather Days for Saturday and Sunday. Forecast confidence on exact rainfall totals remains low midweek, so amounts and timing could still shift as the depression organizes over warm Gulf water.

Until then, north Georgia is expected to keep sunny fall weather through Friday — a short calm window for outdoor plans before tropical moisture arrives. Residents should recheck forecasts before weekend travel, yard work and youth sports, and watch for any flood advisories once the weekend track firms up.

Drivers should allow extra time for weekend trips on I-75, I-85 and I-285 if heavy bands arrive, and check Georgia 511 for any flooding-related closures. Apartment dwellers in flood-prone pockets of the metro should move cars out of known low spots Saturday morning if rainfall rates spike.
