Atlanta has lost a significant figure with the passing of its first Black fire chief, William H. Hamer, who died on July 10, 2025, at the age of 85. Hamer’s contributions to the Atlanta Fire Rescue department and his advocacy for civil rights have left an indelible mark on the community he served.

Hamer was appointed fire chief in 1985 by then-Mayor Andrew Young and served until his retirement in 1988. His appointment was a major milestone in the struggle for racial equality, as Hamer was one of the 16 original Black firefighters who integrated the Atlanta Fire Rescue department in 1963. This integration occurred during a time of significant social upheaval in the United States, marked by the civil rights movement and widespread resistance to desegregation.

Among Hamer’s notable achievements was a lawsuit he filed in 1975 against the city of Atlanta for discriminatory practices within the fire department that hindered promotions for Black firefighters. This lawsuit was instrumental in prompting changes to the hiring practices of the city and paved the way for greater equality in the fire service.

Mayor Andre Dickens expressed condolences and honored Hamer’s legacy, recognizing him for his “fortitude, faith, and fearlessness.” Hamer’s leadership and courage in addressing issues of inequality not only improved conditions for his colleagues but also inspired many within the Atlanta community and beyond.

In remembrance of Chief Hamer, Celebration of Life Services are scheduled for Saturday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at Hoosier United Methodist Church. Friends, family, and the community are invited to pay their respects during a viewing on Friday, July 18, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Murray Brothers Funeral Home Cascade Chapel. On the day of the service, Hamer will “lie in state” at the church from 10 a.m. until the service begins, allowing community members to honor his memory.

Hamer is survived by his wife, Eva, children, grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends and colleagues who will remember him not only as a dedicated public servant but also as a pillar of strength and leadership in their lives.

William H. Hamer’s legacy of public safety and his monumental role in the fight for civil rights continues to resonate in Atlanta today. His commitment to justice and equality has inspired many, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
