University Students Soar at the International Production & Processing Expo in Atlanta

In the bustling city of Atlanta, excitement was in the air as 28 students from the University of North Georgia (UNG) participated in an amazing opportunity at the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) from January 28-30. This event brought together ambitious students and leading employers in the poultry industry, creating a bustling hub for networking and learning.

A Chance to Shine

The students dove right into nearly 100 interviews with a variety of employers, showcasing their skills and ambition to potential future employers. Among the attendees, Jacque Conner, a senior from Dawsonville, Georgia, was eagerly soaking in the experience for her third time. Conner has her sights set on earning her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies after already obtaining her associate degree in agriculture-poultry science in May 2024. Not one to sit idle, she looks forward to graduating in December 2025, ready to embark on a new chapter of her career.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

For many students, this expo was not just about securing a job; it was an opportunity to learn about the expansive and multifaceted world of the poultry industry. Dr. Linda Purvis, an associate professor of biology and poultry science at UNG, highlighted how crucial these experiences are for students. By attending events like IPPE, students gain a deeper understanding of the industry and its diverse career paths.

Students like Ayden Bell, a senior marketing major from Gainesville, Georgia, brought their own unique perspectives to the event. Even without a formal background in poultry science, Bell found immense value in exploring career possibilities in agriculture. This engagement not only broadened his understanding but helped connect theory from the classroom to real-world applications.

Diego Olvera, pursuing a degree in management with a focus on logistics and supply chain management, also found the expo to be a game-changer. He realized how vital the poultry sector is to the overall economy and felt empowered to explore career opportunities within this growing field.

Support from the Industry

The journey for UNG students wouldn’t have been the same without the generous support from the U.S. Poultry & Egg Foundation, the sponsor of the College and Career program at IPPE. This backing made it possible for students to actively engage in a space teeming with possibilities. The attendance was divided, with 17 students experiencing the full three-day event while 11 opted for a more condensed one-day visit. This flexible arrangement was a perfect fit given the expo’s close proximity to UNG campuses.

Easy Access Makes a Big Difference

One of the standout features of this year’s event was the new shuttle service provided by UNG, which transported eight students and six faculty members to IPPE on the second day of the expo. The university sees this as a wonderful addition that makes it easier for students to seize these incredible learning opportunities. Plans are in the works to continue this service for future events, ensuring that students can consistently benefit from accessing the expo.

Networking and Future Opportunities

The students who attended IPPE came away with a wealth of experiences that will serve them well in their future careers. They not only gained knowledge of the industry but also made invaluable connections that can last a lifetime. Overall, the expo was more than just an event; it was a stepping stone toward a bright future in the poultry industry for many UNG students. As they continue to learn and grow, the sky’s the limit for these young professionals ready to make their mark!
