A fallen tree on a house in Atlanta after a storm

News Summary

In a heartbreaking incident in Atlanta’s Mozley Park neighborhood, a 10-year-old girl tragically lost her life when a large tree fell on her family’s home during severe thunderstorms. A’erica Shukai Dixon, affectionately called ‘Tink’ by family, was asleep with her grandmother when the tree crashed through the roof. The incident also left several family members injured, prompting community support and calls for improved property maintenance to prevent future tragedies.

Atlanta, Georgia – A tragic incident in the Mozley Park neighborhood resulted in the death of 10-year-old A’erica Shukai Dixon when a large tree fell on her family’s home during severe thunderstorms on May 3, 2023, around 3 a.m.

A’erica was asleep in bed with her grandmother when the tree crashed through the roof. At the time of the incident, the home was occupied by six family members, including A’erica’s mother, grandmother, and three siblings. A’erica’s mother and grandmother sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital. A’erica’s grandmother is currently in critical condition, having suffered a crushed pelvis and a paralyzed leg due to the impact from the tree.

The impact of the tree was fatal for A’erica, who succumbed to her injuries. Family members described her affectionately as “Tink,” remembering her as a joyful child who loved cheerleading, dancing, making TikTok videos, and playing with her toys. A’erica’s older sister, Akiylah, expressed her deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting that A’erica was not just a sister but her best friend.

The storm that swept through the area brought severe thunderstorms, leading to dangerous conditions. Relatives revealed that the tree had a history of shedding limbs; a large limb fell during Hurricane Helene in 2023, narrowly missing the family’s SUV. Family members notified the landlord about the tree’s precarious state, and it was expected to be cut down, but no action was taken before this tragic event.

In the wake of A’erica’s passing, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to assist with her funeral expenses. The initiative has raised over $18,000 towards a goal of $28,000. A funeral for A’erica is scheduled for May 24, 2023, as her family and friends prepare to say their last goodbyes. The community has rallied around the grieving family, with neighbors and residents offering prayers and support during this difficult time.

In addition to community support, the American Red Cross is providing assistance to the family affected by this heartbreaking incident. The unexpected loss of A’erica has left a deep impact on her family and the community, uniting them in mourning and compassion.

This tragic event underscores the importance of property maintenance and safety, particularly concerning aging trees in residential areas. As the family navigates their grief, they are also raising awareness about the need for vigilance when it comes to managing trees that pose a risk to homes and safety.
