Malachi Chaney receives support from his community during his rehabilitation.
Malachi Chaney, a 19-year-old from Henry County, is making remarkable progress in his rehabilitation after being severely injured during a tornado. Thrown from his second-floor bedroom, he spent weeks in the ICU but is now recovering at Shepherd Rehabilitation Center. His father, Tray Chaney, shared a video of him walking unaided, bringing hope to the family. Support from the community has been overwhelming, with a GoFundMe raising over $103,000 to aid in Malachi’s recovery and rebuilding efforts following the tornado’s destruction.
Locust Grove, Georgia – Malachi Chaney, a 19-year-old from Henry County, is making significant strides in his rehabilitation following a devastating tornado incident that occurred on May 29, 2023. The tornado destroyed his home and left him with multiple severe injuries after he was thrown nearly 300 feet from his second-floor bedroom.
Over the past month, Chaney has been recovering at the Shepherd Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta, where his father, Tray Chaney, who gained fame for his role in HBO’s “The Wire,” shared a video of Malachi walking unaided. The sight brought both hope and relief for the family, as they continue to navigate the aftermath of this tragic event. Tray Chaney noted that this progress felt like the best Father’s Day present anyone could receive.
Malachi’s remarkable journey to recovery follows a traumatic two-week hospitalization at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he spent the majority of his time in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). During this period, he celebrated his 19th birthday just three days after the tornado struck his community. His physical condition deteriorated due to multiple injuries, which included broken bones in his face, broken ribs, a neck injury, and a punctured lung. Despite these injuries, he has been able to regain some autonomy in rehabilitation, showing improvements such as the ability to laugh, talk, and even feed himself.
Rehabilitation is an ongoing process for Malachi, involving both physical and mental therapy as he works on re-learning everyday tasks that many take for granted. His timeline for rehabilitation at Shepherd Rehabilitation Center remains dependent on his recovery progress.
In a show of strength and gratitude, Malachi expressed appreciation for the overwhelming support he has received from family, friends, and the community. As a testament to his influence and support network, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to aid in both his recovery and the rebuilding of their lives following the tornado destruction. The campaign has successfully raised over $103,000, nearing its $120,000 goal.
The tornado that impacted the Chaney family was recorded as an EF-2, signifying severe damage with wind speeds ranging from 113 to 157 miles per hour. This powerful storm not only devastated Malachi’s home but also caused injury to other family members, including his father, Tray Chaney, who was knocked unconscious by debris during the incident.
Before the tornado struck, Malachi had just completed his first year studying theater at Savannah State University, demonstrating his dedication to pursuing a career in the arts. This tragedy has dramatically altered his trajectory, focusing his energy on recovery and adaptation rather than his studies. As he continues his rehabilitation, both his family and the community celebrate his resilience and are hopeful for his future.
Malachi’s mother, Ayesha Chaney, has referred to her son as her superhero, indicating the strength and determination he has displayed throughout the ordeal. The support garnered from the GoFundMe campaign and the collective empathy from the community serve as a reminder of the power of unity in the face of adversity.
As Malachi progresses in his rehabilitation journey, the Chaney family remains optimistic and thankful for the care and encouragement they have received. Each milestone achieved in Malachi’s recovery alike showcases the tenacity of a young man dedicated to overcoming significant challenges and finding his way back to normalcy.
