The initiative focuses on combating food insecurity by offering nutritious meals during the summer months. Children enrolled in Camp Best Friends will automatically receive free meals. Atlanta is set to launch its annual Summer Food Program, starting on June 9 and running through July 25, with a goal to provide 150,000 free meals for children aged 18 and under. This initiative aims to combat food insecurity by ensuring that school-age children have access to nutritious meals during the summer months when school meals are unavailable.

Eligible children members of Camp Best Friends will automatically receive free breakfast and lunch as part of the program. To help parents locate meal distribution sites, they can visit the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning’s website and enter their zip code, ensuring easy access to available resources.

The program will include a food truck that distributes meals to several designated locations, including eight City of Atlanta outdoor pools, four Atlanta-Fulton Public Libraries, and one splash pad. Through these efforts, the program aims to serve approximately 3,000 meals per day to children in need.

Collaboration for Community Support

This Summer Food Program is a collaborative effort between the City of Atlanta’s Department of Parks and Recreation and the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning’s Bright from the Start program. By joining forces, these organizations are dedicated to addressing food insecurity and promoting health among children during the summer break.

City officials have recognized the significance of this program. The importance of ensuring children receive the nutrition necessary for their development during the summer months has been underscored by local government representatives. The program provides vital support for families who depend on school meals during the academic year.

Community Engagement and Broader Initiatives

In addition to Atlanta’s efforts, several other summer meal programs are being offered across the metro Atlanta area, including initiatives in Cobb, Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, and Clayton counties. Each of these programs extends eligibility for meals to young individuals with disabilities up to age 21, thereby inclusively addressing a wider community need.

Various distribution sites throughout these counties include schools, recreation centers, libraries, parks, and partnerships with local nonprofits. These outreach programs work collectively to reach families and children who may not have access to regular meal options during the summer season.

In particular, MUST Ministries is running a separate Summer Lunch Program that feeds thousands of children weekly across nine counties and relies on community support and donations to maintain its ongoing efforts. This program, alongside others, indicates a strong community commitment to tackling food insecurity in the region.

The Summer Food Program represents a significant step in ensuring that children in Atlanta and nearby areas have continued access to nutrition during a critical period of the year. By coming together and utilizing available resources, the city and its partners are actively working to provide essential meals and address the needs of vulnerable families.

With the Summer Food Program quickly approaching, community members are encouraged to mark their calendars and take advantage of this important initiative that promises to support the nutritional needs of children during the summer months.
