Alpharetta, Georgia – Severe storms swept through Georgia over the weekend, injuring four individuals and causing significant property damage as a cold front moved into the region. The National Weather Service had issued a Level 1 risk for isolated severe storms across most of the state on Saturday, warning residents of impending damaging winds, hail, and heavy rainfall.

On Friday, a roof collapse at a medical supply company in Alpharetta resulted in four employees sustaining minor injuries as severe thunderstorms rolled through the area just before 1 p.m. All workers inside the building managed to evacuate safely and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. This incident was part of a broader pattern of severe weather affecting multiple states, with nearly 200 damage reports compiled as thunderstorms traveled over 1,500 miles across the central U.S. to New York.

In addition to Alpharetta, a tornado was reported in Gainesville, Georgia, as video footage captured the suspected twister touching down near Lake Lanier. A separate possible tornado event was also observed in Marrero, Louisiana, though no injuries were reported there. The severe weather led to widespread gusts, with wind speeds recorded at 64 mph in Shreveport, Louisiana, and gusts reaching 60 mph in Murray, Kentucky. Ohio experienced extreme hail, with some measuring 2.5 inches, while 2-inch hail was noted in Vina, Alabama.

Throughout the storm system, over 350 severe thunderstorm warnings were issued in the region, including 12 tornado warnings and 38 flash flood warnings. As the severe weather continued into the weekend, additional storms were anticipated to affect the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. In North Georgia, sporadic storms were noted on Saturday with stronger activity expected later that evening.

The primary concerns for the storms included isolated hail and damaging winds, with accumulated rainfall predictions of up to 2 inches in some areas by Saturday evening. As the evening progressed, forecasters expected the storms to clear, bringing drier air into the region by late Saturday night.

Weather alerts and warnings were prevalent across several counties in Georgia throughout Saturday, prompting disruptions to planned events. An Atlanta Braves baseball game was delayed, and a scheduled Lantern Parade was canceled due to the inclement weather.

Looking ahead, Sunday is expected to bring partly cloudy skies interspersed with sunny intervals, allowing for minimal disruption to outdoor activities. Meanwhile, a burn ban that began on May 1 in Georgia remains in effect as fire incidents have surged in the early months of 2025.

This wave of severe storms is just one part of a larger weather pattern that has affected numerous states leading into the weekend, marking significant weather events across the United States.
