Atlanta, Georgia – A severe storm is set to hit north and central Georgia on Thursday, bringing with it potential risks of 60 mph winds and hail. The National Weather Service (NWS) has alerted residents, indicating that storms are expected to move into the area after noon and continue through the evening before 7 p.m.
Though there is no risk for tornadoes in the forecast, isolated severe thunderstorms could develop, causing occasional strong winds and hail, with some hail expected to be as large as quarter-sized. Frequent lightning is also anticipated as part of the storm system.
The impacted areas include metro Atlanta and its nearby suburbs, while regions in far northeast Georgia, particularly close to the Appalachian Mountains, may experience more intense storm conditions. Local weather forecasts bode uncertain, as a persistent wet pattern is projected to lead to additional showers and storms at least through the following Tuesday, raising concerns about localized flash flooding as early as Monday.
According to the NWS, the detailed forecast for Thursday includes:
Residents should be aware that rainfall totals over the next week may accumulate to 2-4 inches. Given the threats of isolated severe storms during the afternoon hours on Thursday, meteorologists advise that individuals remain vigilant regarding the weather and consider contingency plans, especially with Mother’s Day weekend celebrations on the horizon.
In light of the forthcoming storm system and its impacts, a First Alert Weather Day will be in effect after 6 p.m. on Thursday. Meteorologists encourage the community to take necessary precautions when navigating outdoor plans under these weather conditions.
The forecast indicates that while temperatures will see temporary spikes to the low 80s in the upcoming days, the unsettled weather will dominate through the week, coupled with increased chances for additional rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms. The weather outlook suggests that North Georgia remains in for a turbulent week as springtime storms continue to roll through the region.
