The vibrant city of Atlanta is mourning the loss of an inspiring figure who made an everlasting impact on education and the community at large. William Claude McFarlin, Jr., fondly known as “Mac”, passed away on February 8, 2025, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving wife, Dr. Murdell Claudia Walker McFarlin. Mac’s legacy, built over decades of dedicated service, will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched.
Born on August 13, 1950, Mac was raised in Atlanta as the sole child of William C. McFarlin Sr. and Birdie Louise Torrance McFarlin. From an early age, it was clear that this bright young man was destined for greatness. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1968, setting the stage for a lifelong journey in education and community leadership.
After completing his studies, Mac earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the esteemed Morehouse College in 1972. His thirst for knowledge did not stop there; he went on to receive a Master’s degree from Atlanta University, followed by an Education Specialist degree (Ed.S.) from Clemson University. This educational foundation propelled him into a remarkable 40-year career within the Atlanta Public Schools, showcasing his skills in teaching and administration across 11 different school sites.
Mac was more than just an educator; he was a devoted family man. He and his wife, Dr. Murdell McFarlin, celebrated 45 years of marriage, setting a beautiful example of partnership and love. Together, they raised four wonderful daughters: Arnedia (married to Anthony Mapp), Areshia, Ashley, and Aaronnette. Mac’s family continued to grow as he was blessed with five grandsons and one granddaughter, filling his life with joy and laughter.
Mac’s commitment to his community extended beyond the classroom. As a lifelong member of the Allen Temple AME Church in Atlanta, he took an active role in the congregation, reflecting his deep-rooted faith and dedication to service. Furthermore, he was a distinguished member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Pi Chapter, Spring 1972), contributing to the fraternity’s mission of achievement and brotherhood.
As the community gathers to pay their last respects, the family has organized a series of services to honor Mac’s remarkable life. Viewing will take place on February 13, 2025, from 3 PM to 6 PM, followed by a Wake from 6 PM to 7 PM. A private Kappa Alpha Psi Memorial Service will take place thereafter, from 7 PM to 8 PM, allowing brothers to reflect on their shared memories of Mac.
The Funeral Service will be held on February 14, 2025, at 11 AM, at the Allen Temple AME Church, located at 1625 Joseph E. Boone Blvd NW, Atlanta, GA 30314. Immediately following, internment will occur at Southview Cemetery, 1990 Jonesboro Rd SE, Atlanta, GA 30315, where Mac will rest among those who loved him dearly.
As Atlanta remembers Mac, it’s clear that his influence will not be forgotten. His passion for education, commitment to family, and service to the community mark him as a true leader and cherished figure. As friends, family, and community members come together during this time of sorrow, they will undoubtedly find comfort in celebrating the life of a devoted educator, loving husband, and inspiring father. Mac’s spirit will live on through the countless lives he impacted and the love he shared with everyone around him.
