News Summary

Mercedes-Benz is set to expand its operations in Sandy Springs, Georgia, creating up to 500 new jobs and establishing a state-of-the-art R&D facility. Governor Brian Kemp announced the significant project, highlighting its role in Georgia’s growth as a mobility and technical innovation hub. The expansion aims to enhance operational efficiency and improve customer experiences, with completion expected by August 2026. Local officials laud this move as beneficial for the economy and a testament to Atlanta’s business-friendly environment.

Sandy Springs, Georgia – Mercedes-Benz has announced a significant expansion of its operations in Georgia, a move poised to create up to 500 new jobs at its existing facility in Sandy Springs known as the “1MB” facility. The announcement was made by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who highlighted the importance of the project in reinforcing the state’s status as a hub for mobility and technical innovation.

As part of this expansion, Mercedes-Benz will establish a state-of-the-art research and development (R&D) facility in the nearby area, aimed at consolidating several corporate functions that are currently spread across various locations in the United States. This initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency and allow for better customer experiences. The transition to the expanded facility is projected to be completed by August 2026.

The “1MB” facility, which opened in 2018, currently employs around 800 people. With the addition of this new investment, the number of employees at the site will see a significant increase. Local officials have praised the expansion as a boon to the local economy and a testament to Atlanta’s reputation as a business-friendly environment.

The expansion project comes as a result of collaborative efforts among various organizations, including the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the City of Sandy Springs, Select Fulton, Georgia Power, and the Metro Atlanta Chamber. This partnership underscores the state’s commitment to attracting and retaining major companies like Mercedes-Benz.

In a broader context, this move by Mercedes-Benz further emphasizes the company’s dedication to the U.S. market, following its recent decision to shift production of the GLC SUV to its facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Mercedes-Benz is already a significant employer in the country, providing around 11,100 direct jobs, of which about 8,000 are in manufacturing. The company’s operations have a sizable economic impact, supporting approximately 163,000 jobs when including its suppliers, service providers, and dealership networks.

Governor Kemp remarked that Georgia’s growing reputation as a leader in the mobility sector allows the state to attract world-class companies such as Mercedes-Benz. Jason Hoff, CEO of Mercedes-Benz North America, expressed thanks for the support received from the state and emphasized the importance of having a centralized team to improve the overall agility and customer service of the company.

Overall, this expansion marks a significant milestone for both Mercedes-Benz and the state of Georgia. As the company prepares for this transition, its ongoing investment in local operations signifies a strong commitment to the region and the broader economic landscape.
