Metro Atlanta is coming together to honor fallen servicemembers this Memorial Day with a series of commemorative events throughout multiple cities and counties. The day is marked by ceremonies, parades, and public gatherings designed to remember the sacrifices made by those who served in the military.

Earlier today, a mass honoring over 17,000 fallen servicemembers was held at the Marietta National Cemetery. This solemn event set the tone for further celebrations and remembrances planned throughout the metro area.

The city of Dacula hosted its annual Memorial Day parade starting at 10 a.m. at Hebron Baptist Church. This year marked the 31st annual parade, which celebrated the theme “They Answered the Call. They Paid the Price.” A notable highlight was the participation of James L. Davis, a 102-year-old Army veteran, who served as this year’s grand marshal. The parade, recognized as one of the largest in Georgia, followed a two-mile route, and attendees carried signs featuring the names and photographs of over 300 fallen servicemembers, evoking strong emotions about their sacrifices.

At 10:30 a.m., a remembrance ceremony took place at the 20th-century Veterans Memorial in downtown Smyrna. During this ceremony, the Jonquil Garden Club unveiled a Blue Star By-Way Marker, dedicated to honoring military members. Residents were encouraged to participate in a Memorial March event in Stockbridge, enhancing the community’s engagement with the day’s significance.

Later in the day, at 1 p.m., Gwinnett County officials will conduct a commemoration at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial in Lawrenceville, providing another opportunity for the community to pay tribute. In addition, President Donald Trump is scheduled to honor fallen troops with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery.

As a federal holiday, Memorial Day results in the closure of federal offices, schools, and government buildings, along with many banks and businesses. However, most retailers, including large chains like Target and Walmart, will remain open for business.

In Roswell, residents participated in a Memorial Day ceremony that featured songs, prayers, and tributes to fallen servicemembers. Families brought children to help them understand the importance of honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. A wreath-laying tribute specifically acknowledged prisoners of war and missing service members, highlighting the ongoing remembrance of all who served.

Another local hero, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ryan O’Hara, who passed away last year, was inducted into the Gwinnett County Fallen Heroes Memorial, ensuring his memory will also be honored as part of today’s events.

This weekend, a Memorial Day remembrance ceremony occurred at the Georgia National Cemetery in Cherokee County, which included a moment of silence and ceremonial wreath-laying. Additionally, the Shepherd’s Men organized a 12-mile march into Woodstock to raise funds for veterans, showcasing ongoing efforts to support those in need. Since its inception in 2014, this initiative has raised over $11 million.

The day’s remembrance will conclude with a fireworks and drone show at Stone Mountain Park, celebrating the legacy of fallen service members and providing a festive yet respectful end to the observances.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety has reported increased safety violations and citations during the Memorial Day weekend, which is expected due to significant travel activity. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport anticipates accommodating around 2.6 million passengers between May 21-28, marking an increase of about 143,000 passengers compared to the previous year.
