Weekend Lane Closures on I-85 in DeKalb County

DeKalb County, Ga. — If you’re planning on hitting the roads this weekend, we have some important updates for you. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced some major lane closures on Interstate 85, starting this Friday evening and running all the way through Sunday afternoon. So, grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and let’s go over what you need to know to navigate your weekend plans smoothly.

What’s Happening?

The project involves some construction action as crews will be busy >performing a bridge beam setting. This is part of a larger bridge construction effort aimed at establishing a new traffic flow—a “future Displaced Left Turn” that will help connect the westbound to southbound movements from North Druid Hills Road to I-85. Sounds kind of complex, right? But it’s all in the name of improving traffic patterns and making travel easier down the road.

When Will the Closures Start?

Mark your calendars! The closures will kick off on Friday, November 8, at 7 p.m. and will last until Sunday, November 10, at 1 p.m. During this entire period, drivers should expect one inside lane on both the northbound and southbound sides of I-85 to be closed continuously. So, if you have plans to drive in this area, you might want to consider adjusting your route or travel times.

Overnight Closures to Note

In addition to the weekend lane closures, there will be some overnight interruptions as well. From 11 p.m. on Friday to 7 a.m. on Saturday, multiple lanes will also be closed to assist with the ongoing construction efforts. But wait, there’s more! Another round of overnight closures will occur from 11 p.m. on Saturday until 7 a.m. on Sunday. Keep these times in mind if you’re planning on driving during late-night hours.

Detours and Alternate Routes

With all these closures in place, it’s understandable that you might feel a bit stressed about your journey. However, GDOT is taking steps to make sure drivers are well-informed and directed appropriately. Law enforcement officers will be on hand to help manage traffic and provide directions to ensure everyone can find their way smoothly. Signage will also be present throughout the area to redirect traffic toward appropriate detours.

If you’re looking for an alternate route to dodge those potential delays, consider taking Buford Highway. Triple Team Traffic’s Mike Shields recommends this path as a great way to keep your travel time on track. It’s always better to have a backup plan, right?

Stay Updated

For everyone out there, whether you’re commuting, heading to the mall, or visiting friends, plan accordingly and drive safely. Keep an eye on the weather, as GDOT notes that the lane closures are contingent on weather conditions remaining clear. If you’re curious about future updates or any road changes, staying informed is your best bet.

So, there you have it! A weekend of road construction ahead, but with a little planning, you can still enjoy your travels around DeKalb County without too many hitches. Safe travels and enjoy your weekend!
