Georgia has declared a State of Emergency as a severe cold snap hits the state. North Georgia will face dangerously low temperatures and potential snowfall. Residents are advised to stay updated on conditions and avoid traveling if possible. A Winter Weather Advisory and a Winter Storm Warning are in effect, particularly affecting Upson County. Closures of schools and businesses are anticipated as safety measures are put in place against winter hazards.

State of Emergency in Georgia as Cold Snap Hits!

Georgia residents, buckle up! The peach state is bracing for a serious blast of winter weather. A State of Emergency has been declared effective immediately by the governor as we gear up for a challenging week ahead. Starting tonight, all of north Georgia will be under a Cold Weather Advisory from 10 PM until 9 AM on Tuesday.

Chilly Conditions Await

If you’re thinking about heading out this evening, be prepared for winds that will send chills into the teens. Overnight temperatures are expected to plummet to the teens and 20s, which means it’ll be a bitterly cold night. For those in higher elevations, single-digit wind chills are definitely a possibility!

Snow on the Horizon

As we rise and shine on Tuesday, expect a cloudy and frosty morning with temperatures lingering between the teens and low 20s. But that’s not all folks! A Winter Weather Advisory will kick off tomorrow morning, predicting a light dusting of snow in the mix. While Atlanta is included in this advisory, significant accumulation isn’t likely—just a few stray flurries could flutter through the metro area.

Upson County in the Hot Seat

However, Upson County is under a Winter Storm Warning from Tuesday morning until Wednesday morning, with anticipated snow accumulations of up to 2 inches. Areas south of I-85 can expect around 1 inch of snow, with the southernmost counties possibly seeing the highest totals. The snow is expected to start falling between 2 PM and 8 PM, so be careful if you’re planning to travel.

Road Conditions Hazards

With snow on the way, roads are likely to become slick and dangerous. The combination of cold temperatures and snowfall could create hazardous driving conditions, so plan accordingly! Drivers are encouraged to stay off the roads when possible as the Georgia Department of Transportation is already treating roadways in preparation.

Chill Continues Later in the Week

Looking ahead, there’s another Cold Weather Advisory for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, with wind chill factors potentially dropping to the single digits. This isn’t just a fleeting cold snap; forecasters are predicting that temperatures will stay low, with morning lows in the teens for much of North and Central Georgia, and mid-20s in South Georgia. Overall, highs on Wednesday will barely reach the mid-to-upper 30s.

Safety First

As we face these wintry conditions, several businesses and schools are beginning to announce closures to keep everyone safe. The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency is mobilizing resources as needed, and there may be up to 250 National Guard troops deployed in response to local needs.

Monitoring Ongoing Conditions

It is essential for residents to stay aware of the latest updates regarding this winter weather. Keep an eye on local reports for ongoing updates, tips, and safety information so that you and your loved ones can stay out of harm’s way.

Grab a warm drink, stay bundled up, and prepare for a chilly week ahead in Georgia!
