News Summary

In response to the aftermath of a winter storm, multiple churches across Georgia have canceled their services and activities for safety. Various congregations, including Zoe Baptist Church and Habins Community Church, have opted to remain closed to protect their communities from treacherous icy conditions. While some churches are holding virtual services, others like the City Baptist Church have completely suspended Wednesday meetings. Residents are encouraged to stay updated with local announcements and exercise caution on the roads, where icy conditions have posed serious travel risks.

Churches across Georgia Canceled Services Due to Winter Storm Aftermath

Georgia is feeling the chill this week as multiple churches have opted to close their doors in response to the aftermath of a winter storm that swept through on Tuesday. The icy conditions and leftover snow have forced many congregations to put safety first by canceling services and activities. If you were looking forward to gathering with your community for a mid-week spiritual boost, you may need to hold off for a bit longer!

What’s Closed?

In Conley, the Zoe Baptist Church made the decision to cancel their Wednesday Night Bible Class. Residents in Dacula were also affected, as the Habins Community Church announced that their Wednesday Evening Service was off as well. Over in Stonecrest, the Alive City Church joined the list, shutting down their Wednesday Night Service.

Meanwhile, Momentum City Church in Tucker is taking things virtual, conducting their services online until at least Thursday. Palmetto Baptist Church in Palmetto has closed its office and canceled all Wednesday activities. In Atlanta, Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church has done the same, with all Wednesday activities and meetings fully canceled.

With continued caution, the Dodd-Sterling United Methodist Church in Atlanta isn’t holding any services until after January 26. Additionally, the City Baptist Church in Atlanta has called off their Wednesday Night Bible Study and Prayer Meeting.

Keeping Everyone Informed

Church leaders are actively using a local weather closings system to report cancellations, making sure that everyone stays updated on the changes. This is a reminder to always check in with your local community announcements, especially during unpredictable weather! As temperatures remain frigid, many are looking forward to warmer days ahead, as some improvement is in sight.

Treacherous Conditions on the Roads

The impact of the winter storm hasn’t only been felt in the churches. The roads in Middle Georgia have been described as treacherous, making non-essential travel quite risky. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is advising drivers to steer clear of I-75 and I-475 due to icy conditions and multiple crashes. An incident involving an 18-wheeler jackknifing on Southbound I-75 has caused major traffic delays.

Furthermore, I-75 northbound near Hawkinsville Road is fully closed, with an estimated reopening time of 9 a.m. In similar news, I-475 northbound past Zebulon Road is also shut down, mirroring the same 9 a.m. reopening forecast. It’s wise to keep your travel plans flexible if you find yourself in this region!

Weather Warnings and Precautions

If you live in Baldwin County, be advised that snow removal resources are limited. It seems like they are relying primarily on warmer temperatures to help with road clearance. Residents in Middle Georgia are being warned about the risks of black ice and are encouraged to treat the roads like they are solid ice, which is crucial for safety.

Reports indicate stranded vehicles and blocked lanes throughout several counties due to these hazardous conditions. As if that wasn’t enough, residents are being prepared for the built-up challenges that come with ice accumulation in Southeast Georgia — including the possibility of power outages.

Community Impact

Winter storm warnings have led to cancellations in several counties’ schools, including Charlton, Glynn, and Brantley. Public services, such as operations in local health departments, are suspended due to the severe weather.

As Georgians navigate through this *winter wonderland*, they’re being urged to gear up, prepare for potential outages, and keep a close watch on the weather. Stay warm, and stay safe everyone! Here’s hoping we all can thaw out soon!
