Atlanta, Georgia – Over the Memorial Day weekend, Georgia experienced a tragic surge in traffic fatalities, resulting in the deaths of fourteen individuals in connection with multiple crashes. Law enforcement authorities reported more than 400 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI) during the holiday travel period, which lasted from May 23 at 6 p.m. to May 26 at 11:59 p.m.
The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) documented a total of ten fatal crashes statewide during this 78-hour period, with four of these deadly incidents occurring under their direct response. The fatalities were reported across several counties, including Cobb, Clayton, Richmond, and Gwinnett, along with the cities of Douglasville and South Fulton.
Numerous traffic crashes contributed to the overall danger on the roads, with over 390 total collisions investigated by GSP during the holiday weekend. These incidents resulted in nearly 189 reported injuries, as compared to last year’s statistics, which saw an increase in the number of fatal crashes by three. However, the overall numbers of crashes and injuries declined compared to previous years, indicating an anomalous rise in fatalities this year.
GSP officers conducted extensive monitoring during the holiday, carrying out at least 26,200 traffic stops. In their efforts to maintain safe roadways, the officers issued over 18,000 warnings and made at least 13,000 citations. Notably, citations included around 1,050 for distracted driving, 1,800 for seatbelt violations, and over 300 for improper child restraints. Additionally, 29 citations were reported for boating under the influence, a significant concern as the holiday is often marked by outdoor festivities and water activities.
While the concentrated effort of the GSP has led to a high number of DUI arrests, the rate of fatalities suggests a need for heightened awareness and precautionary measures among the general public. Four incidents unrelated to driving under the influence reportedly resulted in injuries during the weekend, further complicating safety concerns on Georgia roads.
Some of the key fatalities included a motorcycle crash involving two motorcyclists on I-75 in Perry and a pedestrian struck and killed in South Fulton. Other fatal incidents occurred in various locations, including Cobb, Clayton, Candler, Richmond, Peach, and Gwinnett counties, along with Douglasville, Brunswick, and Perry, demonstrating the widespread nature of the incidents. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported in Northeast Georgia during this monitoring period.
The critical numbers from the holiday weekend serve as a sobering reminder of the hazards associated with holiday travel, particularly around festive weekends where increased alcohol consumption and reckless behavior can lead to tragic outcomes. Authorities continue to prioritize traffic safety and urge the public to remain vigilant to prevent preventable accidents and fatalities on the state’s roadways.
