Snow-covered road in Georgia during a winter storm

News Summary

Georgia is preparing for a severe winter storm, leading Governor Brian Kemp to declare a State of Emergency. The Arctic Blast is expected to bring extreme cold temperatures, up to 2 inches of snow, and ice across the state. With a Winter Storm Watch in effect, citizens are advised to stay safe and prepared for hazardous conditions. State offices will be closed, and the National Guard may be deployed to assist. This weather alert emphasizes the need for residents to monitor updates and bundle up for the chilly week ahead.

Bracing for the Big Chill: Georgia Under State of Emergency!

ATLANTA – As if winter wasn’t already here, our beloved state is gearing up for an Arctic Blast that promises extreme cold and snow. Brace yourselves, Georgia! Governor Brian Kemp has just declared a State of Emergency, which takes effect immediately. This declaration will remain active through Tuesday, January 28th, and it’s all about keeping us safe as we weather this storm.

What Does This Mean for You?

The State of Emergency is not just a fancy term; it means the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency is on standby, ready to jump in and manage operations. They’ve activated the State Operations Center, which means they’re mobilizing necessary resources to tackle whatever Mother Nature throws our way. And just to add a layer of preparedness, there could be as many as 250 National Guard troops deployed if things get hairy.

Winter Storm Watch in Effect!

If you live in one of the 128 counties impacted, buckle up! A Winter Storm Watch is already in effect and will stretch from Tuesday morning until Wednesday morning. This watch includes all of South Georgia, most of Central Georgia, and the ever-busy Metro Atlanta along the I-85 Corridor. So what can we expect? Up to 2 inches of snow could blanket our roads between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Sounds like fun for snowball fights, right?

It’s Not Just Snow – Ice Is on the Menu Too!

Alongside the snow, South Georgia could see up to one-tenth of an inch of ice from freezing rain, and far Southeast Georgia might even get up to one-quarter of an inch! Yikes! These icy conditions could make driving a dangerous adventure. On Wednesday morning, be prepared for low temperatures that will plunge into the teens across North and Central Georgia. Southern parts may only reach the 20s!

Bundle Up!

Don’t just think about snowmen—think about how to stay warm! High temperatures on Wednesday will barely break the mid-to-upper 30s, and any lingering moisture is likely to refreeze come Thursday morning. By then, temperatures may reach the lower 40s, which might finally help melt some snow away, but until then, keep an eye on your thermostat!

Stay Safe with Price Gouging Prohibition

In light of this weather emergency, price gouging is prohibited. This means you won’t have to worry about businesses hiking up prices on essentials like snacks and beverages. Plus, the state is suspending hours-of-service limitations for commercial trucks responding to the emergency, ensuring that vital supplies can reach us without delay.

State Offices and Schools Taking Precautions

To keep everyone safe, state offices in Atlanta will be closed on Tuesday, with employees working remotely. This is a smart move given the winter weather conditions. Schools and businesses are also beginning to announce closures. For instance, Zoo Atlanta has delayed its opening. It’s worth checking in with your local schools to see how they’re weathering the storm.

Get Ready for Cold Weather!

Wind chills in areas like Carrollton could feel as low as 11°F, and Ellijay might dip down to a chilling 5°F on Wednesday morning. Some counties may even experience wind chills near 2°F above zero! Make sure your winter gear is at the ready, and stay bundled up when you head outside.

Prepare for a Chilly Week Ahead

With predictions suggesting that temperatures will hover below freezing for the next 36 to 48 hours, citizens are encouraged to monitor updates and brace themselves for potentially hazardous conditions due to the snow and severe cold. So, whether you’re making your favorite chili at home or snuggled under blankets with a good book, prepare to hunker down and ride it out!

The FOX 5 Storm Team has dubbed Tuesday a Storm Alert Day, which signifies a serious weather forecast. Ensure you have any necessary supplies, keep your homes warm, and help one another out during this tricky weather. Georgia, we can get through this together!
