The university has appointed Scott Gordon, Ph.D., FACSM, as the new Dean of the Waters College of Health Professions. Dr. Gordon will officially begin his journey on August 1, 2025, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience that is sure to take the college to new heights.
Dr. Gordon isn’t a newcomer to academic leadership. With decades of experience, he has made quite a name for himself in the field of interdisciplinary health education and is well-known for his student-focused innovations. Before his new role at Georgia Southern, he served as a dean and professor at Arkansas State University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions. There, he oversaw a sizable operation with over 125 faculty members and 3,500 students across an impressive array of 40 programs.
While at Arkansas State University, Dr. Gordon made a mark by leading significant changes that boosted both enrollment and the variety of program offerings. His ability to manage multi-million-dollar facility enhancements was a testament to his strong leadership skills. Moreover, he was instrumental in establishing new academic and clinical partnerships, including exciting collaborations with institutions like Anhui Medical University in China and various regional healthcare systems.

Certainly, Dr. Gordon has a diverse background beyond just his previous role. A U.S. Army veteran, he’s also a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. His past leadership roles include significant stints at Kennesaw State University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. On the academic side of things, Dr. Gordon holds a Ph.D. in Physiology with a minor in Gerontology from Penn State University. He even completed postdoctoral training at the University of Texas Medical School and the University of Missouri. Talk about impressive credentials!
