In a remarkable achievement, seven students from DeKalb County have successfully graduated from the Model Atlanta Regional Commission (MARC) youth leadership program. This graduation marks a significant milestone not only for the students but also for the community, as it was celebrated during a ceremony that honored a total of 43 students hailing from an impressive 11-county region.

Real-World Issues at the Forefront

The MARC program, which has been a beacon of leadership development, focuses on vital real-world issues that resonate deeply within the community. Participants delved into topics such as housing affordability, responsible water usage, and the challenges brought by limited transportation options. Spanning over six months, the program offered students a comprehensive understanding of regional dynamics.

Empowering Young Leaders

Anna Roach, the CEO and Executive Director of the Atlanta Regional Commission, took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of incorporating student perspectives when addressing regional challenges. Throughout their time in the program, students engaged in a variety of enriching activities that included workshops, interactions with local innovators, and enlightening sessions with regional leaders. They also had the chance to visit significant community locations such as:

  • The Water Tower
  • F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center
  • Chamblee City Hall
  • Atlanta Community Food Bank
  • Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners

MARC Program Celebrates 25 Years

As the MARC program concludes its 25th year, it continues to make a significant impact on young leaders in the community. Currently, the program is actively accepting applications for the upcoming school year. The program remains free and is open to 9th and 10th grade students within the ARC region. Interested students are encouraged to submit their applications by May 3.
