The community is buzzing with excitement as senior golfer Matt Calhoun has made a big announcement: he is officially committed to playing golf for Georgia State University. This news rolled in just over the weekend, and it’s no surprise considering his stellar performance on the greens and his role in leading his team, the Grizzlies, to a remarkable victory as the Class AAAAA state champions.
The Grizzlies brought home the state championship trophy after a stunning performance at the beautiful Jekyll Island Golf Resort. They didn’t just win, they triumphed with an impressive six-stroke margin, showcasing both skill and teamwork. The team collectively shot a total score of 568 throughout the championship. In the final round, Calhoun shone brightly, finishing with a score of 69 on his way to an overall total of 144. This victory marks a significant milestone, as it is the first state title for Creekview since Etowah claimed one in 2005 and again in 2022.
Calhoun’s incredible season didn’t go unnoticed. Just a few days after the championship, he was named to the Class AAAAA all-state team on June 2, celebrating his outstanding contributions to the sport. Joining him in the all-state honors is fellow teammate Griffin Latimer, who led the team’s total shot chart, while Tanner Latimer earned an honorable mention after shooting a solid 145. Alongside these talented players, the Grizzlies showcased depth in their roster with notable performances from teammates Ryan Gallagher, Austin Guest, and Reece Whaley.
Calhoun’s announcement was heartfelt, with his gratitude extending to God, his parents, teammates, and coaches who provided support throughout his journey. Georgia State is in for a treat as Calhoun joins their lineup under the guidance of Coach John Michael Cole, who recently completed his first season after coming from VCU. The team certainly welcomes Calhoun with open arms.
This isn’t just a significant personal milestone for Calhoun; it adds yet another feather to Creekview’s cap, as the school has also celebrated recent victories in both slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball. It seems the Grizzlies are on a victory roll! On the wider college scene, Georgia State recently placed 10th in the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Championship, with strong competition from Coastal Carolina, Arkansas State, and Georgia Southern rounding out the top three.
