The Brookville High School band students had an eventful spring trip to Atlanta from May 1 to May 3, 2025. Despite facing unexpected challenges such as delays and a tight schedule, the students demonstrated remarkable flexibility and team spirit throughout their journey.

The trip included enriching experiences, starting with a clinic at UNC Charlotte that provided students with a valuable opportunity for musical growth. Following this, students participated in a guided campus tour, further expanding their educational experience.

On the first full day of the trip, students visited the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Park, where they learned about the Civil Rights Movement, enhancing their understanding of this pivotal aspect of American history. The visit reinforced the importance of social issues and history in their education.

Another highlight of the trip was a visit to the World of Coca-Cola, where students enjoyed sampling sodas from around the globe. The classic Beverly flavor generated considerable discussion among students, marking it as a fun experience during their visit.

The Georgia Aquarium was also part of the itinerary, where students were captivated by impressive exhibits featuring massive whale sharks and playful sea lions. This visit proved to be an educational and entertaining experience, allowing students to learn more about marine life.

Dining at the iconic Varsity in downtown Atlanta was described as a memorable culinary highlight of the trip, providing students with a taste of local culture and cuisine.

However, the trip was not without its obstacles. A bus tire issue caused a temporary delay, although chaperones ensured that all students remained safe during the situation. Despite missing part of their competition schedule, the students were eventually allowed to compete as the last band of the day, thanks to assistance from the site coordinator.

The following day, May 3, students enjoyed a thrilling visit to Six Flags Over Georgia. Their performance at the competition was rewarded with a “Superior” rating, and they placed second in their division. Although a fast-moving storm cut the day at the theme park short, the students demonstrated maturity and teamwork by seeking shelter together during the inclement weather. The day ended on a high note with a group ride on the Carousel.

The students showcased commendable camaraderie, helping one another with dry clothes after getting drenched in the rain. Band Director Mario Ruiz commended the students for their diligent hard work and exceptional talent throughout the trip, noting that their teamwork was a positive aspect of the experience.

Students expressed their enjoyment of the trip through various activities. Shiloh Mack appreciated the insightful lessons about the Civil Rights Movement and cherished the time spent with friends. Gregory Whorley and Gunner Westervelt enjoyed their thrills on the roller coasters, while Gabby Mack had an exciting encounter with Beluga Whales at the aquarium. Other students, such as Ayden Langdon and Gretchen Westervelt, found joy in their time at the park and aquarium, respectively. Jude Wellman enjoyed a more playful moment, running through puddles as they made their way back to the bus.

Gratitude was extended to various contributors for the success of the trip, including Band Director Mario Ruiz, chaperones, W&W Limo, and Harmony Day Support. The overall sentiment surrounding the trip was one of fondness and significance, highlighting the lasting memories created for all participants involved.
