Snowy scene in Atlanta with winter preparations underway

News Summary

As Atlanta prepares for a second winter storm in two weeks, Governor Brian Kemp has declared a statewide State of Emergency. With snowfall and icy conditions expected, residents of metro Atlanta and north Georgia are urged to prepare and stay safe. Schools are adjusting schedules, and road conditions may become hazardous as the storm approaches. Authorities are on standby to mobilize resources, while businesses and flights face potential disruptions. Bundling up and stocking up on essentials is advised for the upcoming chilly days ahead.

Atlanta Gears Up for Another Winter Blast

As the chilly winds sweep across Atlanta, residents are bracing for a second winter storm in just two weeks. Governor Brian Kemp has declared a statewide State of Emergency, expecting this cold front to linger until January 28. Remember the last storm? Well, the timing of this one doesn’t seem to be much kinder!

Winter Woes for Georgia

Not surprisingly, folks in metro Atlanta and north Georgia are scrambling to prepare for what could be a messy couple of days. Schools throughout the region are making adjustments, and many will have delayed starts on Wednesday. Parents, you might want to keep your kids bundled up and ready for some snow fun—if conditions allow it!

A Winter Storm Warning has been extended into metro Atlanta, signaling that snow accumulation is on the way. If you’re venturing out, be careful! With the temperatures dipping, we’re reminded of the unfortunate tragedy where one Georgian lost their life due to hypothermia while being a critical needs patient. It’s a stark reminder to check on the elderly and those in need during this extreme weather.

State Prepare for Challenges

With the storm descending on Georgia, Governor Kemp is urging everyone to avoid unnecessary travel. It’s wise advice considering road conditions could become hazardous. The Georgia Department of Transportation has already pre-treated key interstate routes with brine and is taking measures to prevent ice formation as slushy snow may turn hazardous.

To ensure that the state is adequately prepared for whatever this winter blast throws our way, the State Operations Center is on standby to mobilize resources as necessary. Up to 250 Georgia National Guard troops may also be deployed for storm preparation, response, and recovery efforts.

Snow and Ice Warnings Across the State

You might want to keep an eye on the forecast, especially if you live in South Georgia. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for 128 counties, which covers most of Central Georgia and the I-85 corridor in metro Atlanta. Prepare for some snow accumulation, with predictions ranging up to 2 inches between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Additionally, significant ice accumulation isn’t out of the question for parts of Southeast Georgia.

As temperatures continue to drop, North and Central Georgia could see lows in the teens while Southern regions may hit the 20s. Make sure you bundle up! Any precipitation might stick around until Wednesday, and temperatures are expected to peak only in the mid to upper 30s—a far cry from cozy weather.

Impact on Daily Life

With all this frostiness, it’s no surprise that businesses and schools are affected. Numerous institutions, including Zoo Atlanta and the Atlanta Botanical Garden, are delaying openings or shutting down entirely to keep visitors safe. Airport travel is not immune either, with 181 flights canceled and 226 delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Travelers should keep these potential hiccups in mind.

Winter Preparations in Full Swing

Local authorities are treating roads to mitigate dangers from icy conditions. If you must drive, give our road crews some room to do their jobs safely. Remember that Cobb County and Marietta City Schools are adopting a two-hour delay in response to the antics of Mother Nature. In the midst of it all, residents are encouraged to stay updated and take safety precautions as this developing weather situation unfolds.

So, what does all this mean for you? It’s time to stock up on essentials and prepare for the inevitable chill that awaits. Be smart, stay safe, and let’s hope this winter storm behaves itself!
