News Summary

The Atlanta Board of Education has voted to extend Superintendent Bryan Johnson’s contract for an additional year, now lasting until July 2028. This decision follows a year of leadership focused on improving student achievement and innovative educational strategies. Johnson, with a proven track record, aims to raise teacher salaries and address a projected budget gap while prioritizing educational quality. The district is also initiating a long-term strategic planning process to enhance literacy and college readiness for its students, marking an important phase in Johnson’s leadership journey.

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Board of Education voted unanimously on Monday to extend Superintendent Bryan Johnson’s contract for an additional year, now set to run until July 6, 2028. Johnson, who began his role with the district on August 5, 2024, has received this extension following a year of leadership that has focused on enhancing student achievement and innovative educational strategies.

Before his tenure at Atlanta Public Schools (APS), Johnson served as the superintendent of Hamilton County Schools and was the executive vice chancellor for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His accolades include being named Tennessee’s Superintendent of the Year in 2021 and being a finalist for National Superintendent of the Year, indicating a track record of effective leadership and commitment to educational excellence.

In response to the board’s decision to extend his contract, Johnson expressed gratitude for their continued trust in his leadership. He reiterated the need to prioritize student achievement and to implement innovative strategies that enable students to thrive after graduation.

Under Johnson’s leadership, APS has adopted a “Back to Basics” approach, which places a strong emphasis on math and literacy instruction. This plan is designed to elevate educational outcomes for students in the district, which currently serves approximately 50,000 students. Furthermore, Johnson has set a goal to raise the average teacher salary to $100,000, a move aimed at attracting and retaining quality educators, as well as expanding pre-kindergarten offerings to increase early childhood education access.

However, the district faces significant financial challenges, particularly as it is working to close a projected $100 million budget gap for the upcoming school year. Johnson’s leadership will be critical in navigating these financial hurdles while still striving to maintain educational quality and support for its students and staff.

Board Chair Erika Y. Mitchell commended Johnson’s focus, urgency, and strategic clarity. These qualities are seen as aligning with the values of the community and reflect the board’s confidence in his ability to lead the district through transformative changes. Johnson’s leadership approach not only targets immediate educational improvements but also addresses long-term strategic planning needs.

In accordance with this vision, APS has recently initiated the 2025-2030 Strategic Planning Process. This initiative aims to outline the district’s long-term educational goals, providing a roadmap for the future direction of the schools under Johnson’s administration. The strategic focus areas include enhancing literacy and math instruction, as well as strengthening college readiness programs to prepare students effectively for life after high school.

As Johnson continues his leadership journey with APS, the board’s extension of his contract signifies a strong endorsement of his capabilities to drive significant improvements and navigate the district through crucial financial and educational transformations. The outcomes of his strategies and initiatives will be closely monitored by stakeholders invested in the education and well-being of Atlanta’s youth.
