The findings highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining food safety in the area.

Three Metro Atlanta Restaurants Fail Health Inspections Due to Serious Food Safety Violations

In a recent round of inspections conducted by the GNR County Health Department on March 18, 2025, three metro Atlanta restaurants were found wanting, receiving unsatisfactory scores and failing their health inspections. The findings underscore the ongoing battle for food safety in the area.

Maki of Japan in Buford Scores a Disheartening 64

At the Mall of Georgia, Maki of Japan scraped the bottom with a score of just 64 points. Inspections revealed alarming deficiencies in active managerial control, leaving employees unaware of the critical responsibility to report foodborne illnesses. Concerns were raised when an employee was spotted cooking while sporting bracelets, a potential hazard in food preparation.

Adding to the restaurant’s woes, there were numerous food storage violations, including improper cooling practices and the presence of food debris lurking in walk-in coolers. These findings illustrate a troubling trend that could jeopardize the health of its patrons.

Golden Apple Buffet Faces Multiple Violations

Golden Apple Buffet had a challenging inspection day, filled with multiple food safety violations, although no specific score was given. The eatery suffered from a lack of active managerial oversight, contributing to unsafe practices such as employee drinks stored in unapproved cups atop prep counters.

In addition, Golden Apple Buffet faced serious issues with improper food storage, including instances of cross-contamination and non-compliance with thawing procedures. The inspection found several clean dishes stacked wet, raising concerns about cleanliness and sanitation, while the sanitizer used was found to be below the recommended concentration.

Top Wings and Fish Struggles with Basic Hygiene

Top Wings and Fish didn’t fare much better, scoring a mere 51 points, which falls far below the minimum passing mark of 70. The inspection revealed improper handwashing and glove usage, with employee jackets improperly stored atop food—a clear violation of hygiene practices.

Moreover, the women’s bathroom lacked a covered trash can, an essential amenity for maintaining cleanliness. To add to these issues, Top Wings and Fish failed to provide adequate consumer advisories regarding undercooked animal foods, a critical aspect of informing diners about potential health risks.

Next Steps for the Restaurants

These three establishments will undergo follow-up inspections in the next 10 days. If the violations remain unresolved, they risk facing permit suspensions. Consecutive unsatisfactory scores or repeated violations can lead to tough repercussions, including permit revocation.

On a brighter note, out of 42 restaurants inspected on the same day, 19 achieved a perfect score of 100, while 10 managed scores between 90-99. Only 9 restaurants received a “B” grade, with just one obtaining a “C” grade, showcasing that not all eateries are skirting safety protocols.

The scrutiny continues, and as health inspectors keep a watchful eye, it’s crucial for establishments to prioritize food safety to ensure the well-being of their customers.
