Atlanta, Georgia – Atlanta Public Schools (APS) has appointed seven new principals and a new Executive Director of Athletics during a board meeting held on Monday evening. These appointments are set to take effect on July 1.

New Executive Director of Athletics

Gregory Goodwin has been named as the Executive Director of Athletics, bringing with him over 30 years of experience in educational athletics and school leadership. Previously, he served as the interim athletic director for DeKalb County Schools and held the position of principal at Redan High School in DeKalb County.

New Principals

Among the key appointments is Brian Baron, who will take on the role of principal at Morningside Elementary School. Baron has more than 20 years of educational experience and has been part of the Morningside administrative team since 2018, serving in roles such as school business manager, assistant principal, and interim principal.

Summer Clayton has been appointed as the new principal of E. Rivers Elementary School. Currently an assistant principal at Glenwood Elementary School in Decatur, Clayton has been an educator since 1996.

Tiauna Crooms transitions from her interim principal role to become the permanent principal of Booker T. Washington High School, where she has been recognized for her strong leadership and dedication to student success.

Shermain Jennings will also officially take over as principal of Frederick Douglass High School, having served as interim principal. Jennings has an extensive background, including positions at Ralph J. Bunche Middle School and Benjamin E. Mays High School.

Dr. Angela Mitchell has been promoted from interim principal to principal at North Atlanta High School. With 24 years of experience, she has held previous roles as an assistant principal and math teacher at Booker T. Washington High School.

Kristy Reese has been appointed as the new permanent principal at L.O. Kimberly Elementary School. She enters this role with over 20 years of public education experience and a strong commitment to academic excellence.

Adib Shakir is the new principal of Michael R. Hollis Innovation Academy. Shakir previously served as principal of Princeton Elementary School in DeKalb County and has been recognized for his leadership in supporting students with diverse needs and managing school operations effectively.
