Scene of the drive-by shooting incident in downtown Atlanta
A manhunt is in progress after a Fulton County deputy was shot in a drive-by incident in downtown Atlanta. The deputy, who is in stable condition, was struck by gunfire from a moving vehicle near a busy intersection. Authorities are calling for community assistance to locate the suspect as the investigation unfolds amidst rising violence directed at law enforcement.
Atlanta is on high alert as a manhunt comes into action following a shocking incident that left a Fulton County deputy injured in a drive-by shooting. The dramatic turn of events unfolded on Thursday evening near the bustling intersection of Forsyth Street and Trinity Avenue.
At approximately 5:43 p.m., the Atlanta Police Department (APD) responded to urgent calls for assistance after reports indicated an injured officer on the scene. Upon arrival, officers discovered the deputy suffering from a gunshot wound. Thankfully, the deputy was alert, conscious, and breathing at the time of treatment.
Emergency responders rushed the deputy to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is currently receiving care and is reported to be in stable condition. The deputy has been with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office for roughly four years and experienced a gunshot wound to the lower body.
Authorities, including Sheriff Patrick Labat, view the shooting as an alarming indicator of the rising violence directed at law enforcement officials. Preliminary investigations suggest the deputy was hit by gunfire emanating from a moving vehicle, with the suspect(s) quickly fleeing the scene.
In a connected development, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is still deciding whether to involve themselves in the inquiry, which could add this incident to a worrying count of 24 officer-involved shootings under review this year. Just hours earlier, Fulton County police were involved in a separate deadly confrontation in the Adamsville neighborhood, roughly 8 miles from the drive-by location.
Community support is being called upon to assist law enforcement in locating the individual responsible for this egregious act. The area surrounding the shooting has been cordoned off with crime scene tape, leading to significant traffic disruptions in downtown Atlanta.
Local officials, including the governor and state patrol, have voiced their support for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office in this challenging time. However, as of now, no details have been disclosed regarding the suspect or the motive behind the attack. The investigation is currently being spearheaded by the Atlanta Police Department at the request of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.
In light of this incident, all eyes are on the community to promote accountability for the criminals wreaking havoc and to foster a climate of respect for law enforcement.
