News Summary

On January 6, 2025, an armed robbery at a Krispy Kreme in Atlanta escalated into a dramatic shootout involving off-duty police. The suspect was shot multiple times and later died. Two employees at a nearby rental store were also injured. The GBI is investigating the incident as the community reflects on safety and security.

Shocking Events Unfold in Atlanta: Armed Robbery and Intense Shootout

In a troubling series of incidents that took place on Monday, January 6, 2025, the streets of Atlanta were shaken by an armed robbery that escalated into a dramatic shootout. The events began when a man, armed and dangerous, entered a Krispy Kreme store located in Southwest Atlanta and proceeded to rob the establishment. This brazen act of crime set off a chain reaction that left many questioning the safety of their community.

Inside the Krispy Kreme

The robbery at the Krispy Kreme store went off without a hitch initially, but that calm quickly turned to chaos. After the suspect secured his loot, he made a desperate attempt to flee the scene. Unfortunately for two employees at a nearby Easy Rental store, the suspect’s next move was a terrifying one. As the suspect approached the Easy Rental shop, he brandished his weapon and demanded car keys from the manager, Dan Kniesly.

A Desperate Situation

As witnesses described, Kniesly hesitated in fear. This moment of uncertainty led to a horrifying outcome when the suspect shot him in the foot. Compounding this nightmare, a co-worker of Kniesly’s was also shot in the heel after complying with the attacker’s demands for car keys. It was a chaotic scene that left both employees in urgent need of medical attention.

Trapped and Confronted

After leaving the Easy Rental store, the suspect attempted to escape but found himself cornered in a fenced area behind the building. That’s when off-duty Deputy Lt. Gerald Johnson, who was nearby providing security, became aware of the dangerous situation unfolding. He confronted the armed man and what followed was nothing short of terrifying.

A Dramatic Gunfight

In a fierce exchange of gunfire that had witnesses in shock, around 25 to 30 shots were reportedly exchanged between the deputy and the suspect. Lt. Johnson, armed himself, took cover behind a nearby car, returning fire in a fight for survival. The suspect, wielding an assault-style rifle, was shot multiple times during the confrontation. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries later on.

Injuries on Both Sides

During the terrifying shootout, Lt. Johnson sustained a gunshot wound to his hand. Thankfully, he was treated and released from Grady Memorial Hospital, but both he and the community are grappling with the aftermath of such a violent clash. Meanwhile, the co-worker shot at Easy Rental remains hospitalized, revealing the serious nature of injuries sustained during the incident.

Investigation Underway

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has stepped in to conduct an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. As part of their protocol, they have yet to release the identity of the deceased suspect, leaving many in Atlanta on edge as details emerge. The findings from this investigation will eventually be handed over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Commendations for Bravery

In light of the heroism displayed during the confrontation, Sheriff Pat Labat expressed admiration for Lt. Johnson’s courage. Having served with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office since 1993, Johnson’s return to part-time work after retiring in 2017 showcases his commitment to keeping the community safe, even in the face of danger.

Moving Forward

As Atlanta grapples with the shock from this violent event, there’s an ongoing conversation about community safety and the impact of such crimes on everyday life. The city hopes for a swift recovery for the injured while awaiting further details from the GBI.
