Atlanta – High school students in metro Atlanta have a unique opportunity to compete in a music remix competition called “The Real Thing Remix,” which is hosted by Coca-Cola’s Real Thing Records. This initiative invites young creators to showcase their musical skills by creating their own remixes using a free program known as EarSketch.

EarSketch, developed at Georgia Tech, allows users to mix music through coding, making it accessible for students who may not have traditional music production experience. As an added incentive, the Atlanta hip-hop duo EarthGang has contributed original sound samples for students to incorporate into their remixes. This competition is exclusively open to students from Atlanta Public Schools and the DeKalb County School District.

A panel of judges comprising members from Coca-Cola and Georgia Tech will determine the winner of the competition. The winning student will receive an “exclusive experience” at World of Coca-Cola for their class, along with a surprise from EarthGang. The competition is set to run from September 16 to October 15.

The Real Thing Records was launched in June 2024, following a partnership between Coca-Cola and Universal Music Group, aiming to identify and elevate emerging artists globally. Joshua Burke, Coca-Cola’s global head of music and culture, noted the significance of encouraging new creative expressions and providing platforms for emerging voices.

EarthGang, formed in 2008 by Johnny Venus and Doctur Dot while they were high school students, has made a name for itself in the music industry with popular tracks such as “Sk8” featuring Ciara and “Sacrifices” with Dreamville, J. Cole, Smino, and Saba. Their most recent album, “Perfect Fantasy,” featuring collaborations with Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg, and T-Pain, was released on October 29, 2024.

EarthGang’s previous album, “EarthGang vs. the Algorithm: RIP Human Art,” released in 2023, discussed the implications of algorithms and AI in the art world. The duo aims to create a punchier sound by minimizing unnecessary material in their music and has been nominated for Grammy Awards including ‘Best Rap Performance’ in 2020 and ‘Best R’n’B Song’ in 2021; however, they have not won any awards to date.

This competition provides not only a fun opportunity for high school students to engage creatively but also helps to bridge the gap between technology and music in education. With the support of established artists and corporations, young musicians in Atlanta can gain invaluable experience and exposure as they embark on their artistic journeys.
