STATESBORO, Ga. — Georgia Southern ground out a 19-3 win over Appalachian State on Saturday night, leaning on Tripp Bryant’s leg and a defense that never let the Mountaineers find the end zone.

The victory lifts the Eagles to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in Sun Belt play and puts them in control of the conference’s East Division with four weeks left. Appalachian State dropped to 5-3 and 2-2.

Bryant, a second-year kicker, opened the scoring with a 25-yarder early in the second quarter and later added kicks of 35, 34 and 48 yards after halftime. Running back Taeo Todd supplied the only touchdown of the night on a 5-yard run that capped a 12-play, 81-yard march.

Quarterback Max Johnson completed 36 of 47 throws for 318 yards. Alex Taylor caught 10 balls for 93 yards, and Josh Dallas added 86 receiving yards.

Georgia Southern held the ball for 43:54 and forced three turnovers. App State managed 222 yards of offense, just six of them on the ground, and converted only two of nine third downs. Its lone points came on a 33-yard field goal by James London as the first half ended. Mountaineers linebacker Colton Phares was busy all night with 12 tackles, his second game in a row in double figures.

Defensive back Chance Gamble ended the last real threat by picking off a pass at the goal line with 3:02 remaining.

It was a fourth straight win for the Eagles over App State, though the Mountaineers still hold a 21-20-1 edge in the all-time series. The Eagles have also never lost a Halloween game, improving to 5-0 on Oct. 31.

Johnson, a seventh-year quarterback, spread the ball around on an evening when the Eagles controlled the clock and kept App State’s offense on the sideline for long stretches.

Georgia Southern stays home to face Marshall next Saturday, while Appalachian State hosts Georgia State.
