SOUTH FULTON, Ga. — Drivers who use Fairburn Road on the south side of metro Atlanta will have to find another way starting Monday, Oct. 19. The City of South Fulton is closing the road to drivers passing through where it crosses both the north and south branches of Utoy Creek, so crews can build two new bridges, a closure expected to last roughly six months.

The shutdown begins at 8 a.m. Monday. It had first been scheduled for Oct. 5 but was pushed back after the city ran into technical and operational problems tied to a water main in the area that had to be resolved first. The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management is working on the project alongside South Fulton crews.

Through traffic will be sent on a signed detour that leaves Fairburn Road for Benjamin E. Mays Drive SW, turns onto Lynhurst Drive SW, then follows Cascade Road back to Fairburn Road SW. City officials are asking drivers to watch for posted signs and plan on extra travel time.

People who live or run businesses inside the work zone will keep local access to their properties during the closure.

The bridges are part of the larger Fairburn Road Improvement Project. Once utility lines are relocated, both structures will go up at the same time, and crews will also work weekends. The city said building them together is meant to speed the job and shorten how long drivers are inconvenienced.

South Fulton expects the bridge work to wrap up in spring 2027 and said it will post schedule and traffic updates as construction moves along.
