ATLANTA, Ga. — Atlanta city leaders on Friday moved into full storm footing for Hurricane Isaias, canceling or shifting a long list of Saturday events, activating emergency shelters, and locking in weekend staffing as forecasts pointed to damaging overnight winds, heavy rain, flooding risk and an elevated tornado threat through Saturday, Oct. 10.

Officials said a citywide emergency coordination meeting confirmed readiness across departments, public safety agencies, emergency management and utility partners. The City Joint Operations Center was set to activate at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, with departments keeping emergency staffing through the weekend.

Primary concerns listed by the city included damaging overnight winds, widespread power outages, fallen trees, heavy rainfall, localized flooding and an elevated tornado threat Saturday afternoon and evening. Atlanta Police and Fire Rescue planned enhanced staffing, with transportation crews assigned to flood-prone roads and parks forestry teams standing by.

Atlanta Pride canceled all Saturday, Oct. 10, programming at the 2026 Atlanta Pride Festival in Piedmont Park because of the severe weather threat. Organizers said Sunday festival programming and the Atlanta Pride Parade on Oct. 11 were still expected to proceed if weather and safety conditions allow, and that Saturday-only Premium Passes would be honored Sunday.

The city also closed recreation centers for regular Saturday programming and canceled youth football, cheer and recreation programs for Saturday, work that falls under the Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation. Parks movie nights were canceled Friday and Saturday. SpelHouse homecoming tailgate plans tied to Morehouse College and Spelman College moved to Sunday. City Climate Week outdoor kickoff events for Saturday were canceled. The Mayor 5K on the Runway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was postponed, with a new date pending. Atlanta Fair postponed its grand opening to Sunday, Oct. 11.

Emergency shelters for unhoused residents were activated beginning at 11:00 p.m. Friday. Selena Butler Recreation Center was designated for women and children at 98 William Holmes Borders Senior Dr. SE. Rev. James Orange Park Recreation Center was designated for men at 1305 Oakland Drive S.W. Outreach teams were deployed to connect people experiencing homelessness with transportation to those sites.

Residents were urged to monitor official alerts, including the NotifyATL system, and to check directly with event organizers before traveling. Sunday plans remained subject to weather and operational assessments as Isaias impacts moved through metro Atlanta.
